Speciale Focus - The coolest of STEM at your fingertips
Technology, Software, Sustainability, Rocket Science, and some Humour......
Beginnings are hard. But also exciting!
We’re Speciale Invest, an early stage VC fund focussed towards SaaS and Frontier Tech. We’re in the business of enabling visionary founders build technologies of tomorrow. Don’t believe us? Well, our portfolio companies are building a lot of cool stuff from flying taxis, to small scale rockets, to electric super bikes, and a device that makes water from air. Literally!
We evaluate new technologies, study the latest trends, and meet great founders on a regular basis. And more often than not, we come across reads that blows our minds. So we thought we’ll share it with you.
Make sure to follow us, and maybe you’ll find a couple that blows your minds too!
Let’s goooo! 🚀🚀🚀🚀
1. Quantum Computers could soon be practical
Well, if you haven’t seen a quantum computer before, look no further. Looks whacky, we know 😵💫😵💫😵💫.
These are computing systems capable of exponentially outperforming the fastest super computer in existence by several million times. While significant breakthroughs have been made in achieving quantum supremacy (proving quantum computers are faster than classical computers), quantum computers are still not practical. But it could soon change, thanks to the discovery of the Unimon Qubit by Aalto University, IQM Labs, and VTT Research center in Finland. Check out their publication on Nature here.
2. Artemis marks a new era of human space exploration
Have you heard of Saturn V? The retired American super-heavy lifter held it’s own as the most powerful rocket ever made with a capacity to carry 140 tonnes to LEO. Well, not anymore. With the launch of the Artemis space program, NASA SLS (Space Launch System) lifted off the Kennedy Space Center’s 39B launchpad marking it’s place in history as the most powerful rocket ever made.

3. DK1 - A new way to fully experience the virtual world
“Ready Player One” doesn’t seem far fetched as Teslasuits and Somnium Space unveiled the DK1 - a haptic feedback suit capable of full body motion capture with VR earlier this July. The 20,000 $ suit has 68 haptic feedback points capable of simulating a wide variety of physical movements making reality feel a little less interesting.
4. Dall.E2 - Create realistic images from natural language
What if I wanted an image of an “Astronaut riding a horse in Space”? I don’t have to spend hours designing it, instead, I could just type “Astronaut riding a horse in Space” in Open AI’s “Dall.E2 platform” and the following images will appear.
Dall.E2 is a truly revolutionary breakthrough in terms of AI applications. Imagine being able to create images and art of anything you want in seconds. DALL·E 2 can expand images beyond what’s in the original canvas, and can also make realistic edits to existing images from a natural language caption / text. It can add and remove elements while taking shadows, reflections, and textures into account.
What’s next!
We’ll go a little light considering this is our first issue. But we hope you’ve gotten a feel of what it’s going to be like with Speciale Focus moving forward every month.
